The latest Airedale Veterans’ Breakfast Club on Saturday 11th February was well attended with 15 members present. As always the staff at Wetherspoon’s the Livery Rooms were excellent hosts. The club is part of a national network with the local event being supported by Keighley Armed Forces Association- KAFA.

All branches of Her Majesty’s Armed Forces were represented and Veterans were present who’s service spanned from the Far East in the late 1940’s, to recent operations in Afghanistan.

WO2 Gavin Roberts, who serves with the Yorkshire Regiment, was our special guest. He offered his support for the Breakfast Club, and also for Keighley’s Armed Forces Day (at Marley Sunday 18th June). The Yorkshire Regiment has strong historic bonds with Keighley, as does WO2 Roberts who has almost 40 years of service!

The two hours passed very quickly with everyone engaged in constant conversation. The closing of the discredited Iraq Historic Allegations Team (IHAT) was discussed, and this is seen by the Veterans as a positive move by the Government. It’s misled operation had persecuted veteran’s long after the end of their service at a time in their lives when they were recovering from serving their country.

Concerns were expressed that a similar situation is ongoing for those who served in Northern Ireland during “the troubles”. Keighley MP Kris Hopkins, himself an Army Veteran, is now the Minister for Northern Ireland, and it is hoped that he will use his influence to end the persecution of Veterans who are now pensioners.

KAFA Chairman Luke’s very clean plate.

Not all topics of conversation were serious. Most were were story swapping about amusing events that seem to follow the Armed Forces no matter where they serve.

KAFA Chairman Luke Davison made sure that “no breakfast was left behind”!

The next breakfast club will be held 10-12am on Saturday the 11th March at the usual venue – Wetherspoons “The Livery Rooms “, in Keighley.  See the Airedale Veterans’ Breakfast Club webpage for more details.
